Though supposedly Democratic president Barack Obama claims that the NSA is only interested in protecting the American people, investigations and reports made by former NSA operatives Edward Snowden, Kirk Wiebe, and William Binney prove otherwise- that 90% of the information collected is on ordinary citizens, focusing particularly on Muslim Americans. They have been caught hacking into the emails of well know Muslim activists, though these prominent people have no known connection with jihad groups or any criminal history. But that is only one part of greater unconstitutional practices that the mainstream media has swept under the rug regarding this organization.
The NSA is known to collect what is called metadata, which is huge amounts of information (emails, texts, cell phone calls, internet usage, etc.) stored in units of gigabits. It only takes 10 of these gigabits to store the information of all 300 million United States citizens. This in itself raised a red flag for former NSA operative Binney, but it’s what being done with this information that makes it even more dangerous.
According to Weibe, the NSA divides all this massive amount of information into groups (i.e. Muslim Americans, civil rights politicians, and political activists), violating numerous privacy laws, and storing what is supposed to be private information for future use- essentially, making it so people are already considered guilty. This ‘if you have nothing to hide, you’re fine’ approach goes contrary to the whole idea of democracy and the US justice system, which is supposed to presume the innocence of any given individual arrested for something a police office thinks he/she did. The prosecution should always have the burden of proof; now, what we are seeing is the NSA collecting all information on everyone, and anyone who speaks out against their practices or against the government could potentially be considered a threat or a criminal. What we could see in the future is this information being used for other sub-outlets of the NSA’s secretive programs in the fields of information, psychological, military deception, computer network and operation security.
This is no less than Orwell’s ‘1984’ come to life. It is time for the American people to put aside their political, religious, ethnic, racial, and any other differences and unite against one looming threat to liberty- the National Security Agency.
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
